A friend is coming to stay with me in a few days and this friend's name is Ramadan. Ramadan visits me as well as every practicing Muslim around the world each year and stays for the duration of a month (29 or 30 days). Ramadan doesn't tell us the exact day he will arrive but instead he asks you to observe the moon for his sign and when we see that sign, the

While most Americans are trying to cope with the worse economic crisis in recent times, the constant rise in tuition costs is becoming a serious problem for families nationwide. The growing cost of healthcare has been one the main discussion points in Washington and in the media but tuition costs has long surpassed that and has been growing faster than anything else in the economy. One main reason for the rising cost of college tuition is the governmental budget cuts. With less public funding, schools have no choice but to raise tuition to cover their costs. Colleges have also been spen...

During today's D&R meeting, Daniel and I presented The Teachers College Curriculum Studies Program. The project is a collection of curriculum related materials from all 50 states and US territories such as Guam and Puerto Rico. Our goal at the meeting was to solicit feedback from the team on how we might be able to market the project at Teachers College and beyond. The files currently sit in PocketKnowledge. CUNY students again have to deal with tuition hikes. All CUNY students face 5 percent increase in tuition and another $500 increase for students of the Hunter School of Social Work this semester. This increase comes after a 15 percent hike was imposed on students last year. The CUNY Board of Trustees have also voted for another 2 percent increase for next year's tuition but it requires the approval of the state legislature before its implemented. Since 2...

New York's State Education Commissioner, David Steiner, agreed last Monday to let Cathie Black serve as the next New York City Schools Chancellor. Black, an executive of Hearst Magazines, was appointed by Mayor Bloomberg in November to replace outgoing chancellor Joel Klein, but her appointment came with much public criticism due to the fact that she had no previous education background. With no educational background, Black's appointment required the approval of the state commissioner. Steiner agreed with Bloomberg's decision to appoint Black despite an advisory panel's recommendation for ...

During the beginning of this current Ramadan, I read this article about professional soccer players who observed the fast during the month. The physical activity required of these athletes along with fasting makes it a very difficult and strenuous task for the body to endure, especially during the hot summer days. As Ramadan would be occurring in the summer months for the next couple of years, exceptions have been made for these athletes to eat and drink on game days. As an athlete, I was at first very elated to hear ...

As part my weekend routine, I attended Islamic School. Since it is the Islamic month of Ramadan, the main focus of the lessons in class was on the fast being observed. My Ustaz (teacher in Arabic) often describes Ramadan as "Correctional Institution". He gives it this description because Ramadan is not just about refraining from food and drink. It also involves avoiding everyday evil such lying and backbiting, and also showing kindness and offering charity. Ramadan is suppose to be a period where Muslims focus on spiritual cleansing and establishing a closer link to God. I came acro...
