In December 2016 the Learning Theater was the site of the quarterly meeting of the Teachers College Board of Trustees. The theme of the meeting was distance learning and the theater space was curated to support the theme.

On November 30, 2016 we held the EdLab Seminar in the Learning Theater. Our goal was to try out the Learning Theater as a seminar space while developing some materials that might be useful for thinking about systemic problems for the upCreation Experience. Pre-Seminar prep for the facilitators and the tech team
Early in the fall 2016 semester The Learning Theater was the site of the Learning Analytics Program orientation session. The goal was to introduce the learning analytics students to the Learning Theater as a site for research. We concentrated activities in the north and central sections of the theater and used the south sections for equipment and control consoles.

In October 2016 the Learning Theater was the site of the fall meeting of the Teachers College Board of Trustees. The theme of the meeting was the presidential election and the theater was designed to support the theme.

In August 2016 we used The Learning Theater for a one-day design event hosted by the President of Teachers College for representatives from k-12 and post-secondary schools. The goal was to gather ideas for ways that Teachers College could support schools in making good technology choices.

As elements of The Smith Learning Theater construction lingered on after the major phase, we were able to stage several events to try out the new space. Some of the first experiments were developed by our summer 2016 interns who made good use of the new facility and treated us to a series of events.

There are many dimensions to environments for learning. Some are macro in nature such as the political environment for learning, the social environment for learning, or the network environment for learning . Others are more mid-level such as the organizational environment for learning. Still others are more immediate and small scale such as the interpersonal environment. Developing the plan for the Smith Learning Theater involved a number of activities over a period of several years. Central to the planning process was a series of day-long design events conducted by the Collaborative Solutions Group at the Gottesman Libraries.
