It is a miracle that I found this conference. Somehow, my convoluted journey from painter, to microbiology major, to medical illustrator, to movie special effects, to mom, and back to fine art inspired by science drove me to spend two years of my life designing and producing a chemistry board game and set of rubber stamps of the elements. Right around the time I was finishing it up, my digital friend and sometimes collaborator, Jim Pallas, informed me of this conference. I might even get to meet him face to face here!
I am almost ready to ship my series of chemistry board games...
Hi, a brief introduction to me , myself and avatar. My name is Joff Chafer and I have been exploring performance possibilities in virtual environments (specifically Secondlife) and also mixed/blended reality performance. I'm hoping to present some of this work at the conference so would really like to get in touch with anyone else attending who already uses Secondlife (or is interested in playing in a virtual world (or with avatars in a real one.)) I can be contacted here or in-world, where I go under the name of Joff Fassnacht. I will post links to clips, Slurls etc in my profile.

The jester’s original function was to recite jests—narrative tales of heroic exploits (O.Fr. geste “action, exploit, romance”). Like fabled tricksters, they amused, cajoled, spun ludic into lucid and transported listeners by weaving together is-was-and-could-be. Both mythic and real, tricksters draw us into this “uncanny territory, a space ruled by the disarming charm of the very young child. It is a traveler’s space where everything is on the road, cut loose from any clear locale. Here the citizens walk their livestock backward and speak a weird reversing language” (Hyde 1995). In an...
When we first started dreaming up this conference - I recall going for a run and riffing on the "con" in conference, and thinking about how it would be a gathering not only of concept and content but also of construct, as in constructing. And that creativity doesn't come out of thin air, rather from ideas in conversation, converging, conceived in conjoined contemplation - but never in isolation. Finally, (I was saying to myself) by placing the emphasis in ‘conference’ on the ‘confer’, as in ‘convergence’, we'd and that’s exactly what we’re after. A confer-ence, a conversation, bringing togethe...
Four colleagues and I will be presenting a "cabinet of curiosity" at the conference -- an actual cabinet filled with shoebox-sized "provocations" -- and we already have a bunch of promises from fascinating people, including:
- Something made entirely from used items picked up at Property Disposition
- An edible/drinkable provocation
- Something by an architect who is not interested in buildings
- A cube covered with comics
- A working steam engine
- A representation of fractions using length and color
... plus several more we can't even begin to categorize yet. Should be ...
