An End to the Google Books Settlement?
The road to the Google Books settlement has been long, complicated, and challenging. You may remember back in March when Judge Denny Chin shot down Google's bid to begin selling access to scanned out-of-print and orphan works in their database. Yesterday Judge Chin, frustrated with the slow pace of progress on the case, gave Google a deadline of September 15th to negotiate new settlement conditions on threat that he would send the 6-year-old case to trial. Those of us who have a care for the future terrain of digitization and access should mark our calendars, but I wouldn't do it in pen.
