Trends in Ed, 1.12.10, Foursquare: The Better Twitter
Foursquare: A Social Networking Site helpful for Campus Experience According to latest Mashable news, schools such as Harvard and UNC Charlotte are getting creative with Foursquare, a location-aware social networking site (and mobile application). It is a smarter-version Twitter that not only lets users update their status and connect with friends online, but also allows them to find friends in real-life when they are in the same place at the same time. While Harvard just started to partner with Foursquare to develop a campus-wide game to encourage students to connect more with friends and professors through location-based game play, as well as to inspire campus visitors to explore the grounds and uncover tips or share to-dos, UNC Charlotte just became the first university in the country to offer promotions through Foursquare across their campus. The information and experience provided by this site is so much related to our previous discussions regarding "free food at TC" and student orientation. Students can use the app and game to uncover the university's hot spots, find the best social gatherings, bond with their peers and actually learn a thing or two about social media in a real-life context. It is definitely a promising tool for campus experience.
