White Papers to Guide Development of Educational GamesThe Education Arcade at MIT recently released two white papers on educational games and related learning technologies. Moving Learning Games Forward examines both learning and commercial games and recommends a list of design principles for learning games (pgs. 31 to 43) to a wide range of stakeholders.
Using the Technology of Today in the Classroom Today, on the other hand, is addressed specifically to classroom teachers and provides persuasive reasons to incorporate new tech such as games, simulations, and social networking into learning activities. The paper also introduces case studies of specific teachers and best practices. What a great reading for teachers, administrators, and policy makers who might be skeptical or fearful of ed tech “revolution” when in fact (according to the paper) it is “evolution.”
More Freely Available Online Courses
Following up on Jo's post on Wikiversity and Academic Earth, which offers free online videos of lectures from some of the world's most renowned scholars, here is more! Open Learning Initiative at Carnegie Mellon Univ. allows anyone to take college-level courses for free.
I actually created an account and signed up for a few courses just to browse. Strangely, profiles of faculty members are not published. Conveniently though, most simulation/practices are embedded on the site itself and provide immediate feedback. I see lots of room for improvement; maybe I'm being more critical than I have to be since I have a mix of soft and hard feelings about my alma mater. Seriously, when I was a freshman and learned that computer labs are called clusters and the registrar's office is called the hub… I cracked up and asked, what did I get myself into?
iPhone-App-a-DayBrain Thaw is a simple puzzle game that tests basic math skills but it will be challenging if you are not quick with multiplication and fractions. There are different levels of difficulty with each higher level showing a faster monster to eat you up unless you eat your correct answers first. It's to eat or be eaten.
