Wearable Books
Most of us librarians really...really love books. I also really love jewelry. Last week, my like-minded coworker and I visited an exhibit at The Gallery at Reinstein|Ross on 30 Gansevoort Street in Chelsea. Located in the gallery's back room, "Read and Worn: Jewelry from Books" exhibited works by five artists from around the world. Their wearable pieces had with one thing in common -- each was fashioned from a book or newspaper selected by the artist; oftentimes the piece was inspired by the words or images on a specific page. The pieces ranged from rings to brooches to wall-hanging necklaces -- many were lightweight, some attached to pieces of metal. We were encouraged to try on the pieces -- and we did! Unfortunately, the exhibit is over -- but you can view the pieces below or on the artists' individual websites. Or perhaps you would like to create something of your own with paper? Discover the history and use of paper in "Unfolded" (2009) by Schmidt & Stattmann -- it is currently available in our online collection as an e-book. Alternatively, you could surprise your students with some fun paper activities in  "Pop-up paper engineering : cross-curricular activities in design technology, English and art" (1991) by Paul Johnson located in the second floor Reading Room Curriculum section with call number Z1033.T68 J64 1991. Shake up the classroom with some mixed-media instruction with "Teaching mixed media to children" (1995) by Karla Cikánová located in the 3rd floor stacks with call number N350 .C5 1995. Also, feel free to check out Columbia University's Avery Architecture & Fine Arts Library on campus, closer to Amsterdam between 118th & 119th Streets, for volumes & volumes of art books.   IMG_20160428_141120 IMG_20160428_141137 IMG_20160428_141856 IMG_20160428_141424 IMG_20160428_141503IMG_20160428_141309IMG_20160428_141758IMG_20160428_141208 IMG_20160428_141224IMG_20160428_141347
