Learning Theater Spotlight: Constructing a Praxis of Artist/Educator

When it comes to art, often the way it is taught in the classroom and the way it is put into practice can feel very disconnected. Art & Art Education instructor and doctoral student Dahye Kim aims to bridge this gap through events like "Constructing a Praxis of Artist/Educator," hosted in the Smith Learning Theater. Part collective exhibition, part group discussion, the three-day affair welcomed all members of the Teachers College community to experience contemporary art with local studio art faculty, recent MFA graduates, and students from Professor Kim’s Video Art Class, to share and compare studio art teaching prep, pedagogy, and practices. In addition, all 21 video-, sculpture-, painting-, or installation-based pieces on display were accompanied by Q&As and written educational statements by the artists to further fill the negative space between the world of art education and art in the world.
