Now it's ninth year, the World Science Festival was launched in an effort to foster a community informed, inspired, and motivated by the wonder of science outside of laboratories and classrooms. Today WSF and ConEd are bringing science to the boroughs through a pilot initiative entitled "City of Science." The series launches in the Bronx at Lehman College where children and adults from local schools and around the neighborhood enter a STEM-themed carnival of larger-than-life interactive demonstrations and exhibitions. Stations are run by docents plucked right from the community who are public school teachers, grad students, or work in the field. Through innovative experiments, these science ambassadors engage attendees in concepts from chemistry, physics, and robotics that can be difficult to learn at a desk. Playing catch with an automaton, walking on water, or challenging your friend to a magnetic tug-o-war is far more effective and exciting. Right up there with Saturday morning cartoons.
