As we move more fully into developing tools to support mobile learning opportunities, it seems that audio will play a larger role in our work. Audio has a number of advantages as a mobile technology, including the ability to create an immersive experience without totally distracting users from the other activities around them. However, audio also has some limitations such as enforced linearity and, of course, discounting the powerful opportunities that visual presentation can offer. With these things in mind, it may be worth some careful thought about how audio-centric learning experiences could be made more layered and more powerful by the settings we create for audio tools. Audio data carries much more information than the immediate listening experience and audio tools and settings could be developed to use such information to enhance (and not distract from) direct listening.
