The Learning Theater isn't the only place people are experimenting with technology to create augmented experiences. The 4DSOUND experiment and institute has made a custom environment for listening.
A group of composers, technicians and sound engineers have come up with a space designed to record and experience sound in a unique way; as an environment.
4DSOUND is a fully omnidirectional sound environment where the listener can experience sound in an unlimited spatial continuum. Sound can move infinitely far away or come intimately close: it moves around, as well as above, beneath, in between or right through you. Led by your ears, you’re encouraged to explore the space. You can move between blocks of sound, touch lines of sound and walk through walls of sound.
Using computer aided sound-vision software and directions speakers, audience members experience optimal, intentional sound in the space, rather than only in the areas that traditional speakers are pointed at. This approach can also be used for recording, for instance a performer can move around an audience specially rather than everyone facing one central location.
The information of 4DSOUND's website has a great video about their process and the artists who they've collaborated with. I highly recommend a visit, it will change the way you think about your auditory experiences!
