Here's a challenge for some enterprising EdLabbers. Take a look at this piece on BlufftonToday, a community website of Bluffton, SC with a high level of participation in the creation of content. Any ideas relevant to the TC community or our more general publishing agenda?

BlufftonToday reminds me of the little community newspapers that appear on my sidewalk once a week. The focus is definitely local. The columnists and letter writers show very little polish. Three things that strike me about BlufftonToday: (1)the community contributors are expected to supply the content; (2) contributors are expected to "play nice" and I suspect an editor is reviewing all the entries; and (3) this web site is not the "official" Bluffton Today Newspaper although articles from the web site may get cleaned up (with the author's permission) and published in the newspaper.

The first time I heard about this paper was in the Economist. According to the Economist, a paper like this is successful because it is hyper-local and hyper-relevant. “People want their paper to tell them how to get richer, and what they might do in the evening… and this is the information—according to the Economist—a successful publication must provide. What would a TC version of this look like? I know many studetns are confused about the doctoral process, are confused in their teaching careers, and are confused about research. Somehow this confusion is not addressed currently. Although it may seem ‘beneath’ other outlets, it may be something to think about if we are interested in creating a relevant publication.
