President Obama recently announced a program to defer the deportation of young illegal immigrants for two years. Undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S before they were 16 years old and are under the age of 30 at the time of their application are eligible for the program. If indeed granted the reprieve, they will be eligible to apply for work permits which in turn could land them the jobs they need to earn income.

Given the age guidelines listed in the new policy, undocumented college students are the ones bound to benefit the most. For some, it will give them the opportunity to continue their higher education ambitions. Also since undocumented students are uneligible to recieve financial aid, the work permit feature will allow them to get a temporary job to help defray the cost of tuition. Many see this new policy as a small step in the direction of possibly being granted full resident status.

Great blog Duncan, this is a great way to help out the undocumented that migrated for better. While this is happening did you know that in Arizona the governor does not want to give state or local public benefits, to those that qualify for temporary legal status. Here is the article I read about no state or public benefits to those in Arizona. What are your thoughts on this?

If Arizona continues on this path where they essential try to deny rights for undocumented immigrants, they will run into trouble with the Supreme Court and perhaps get the court to grant certain rights to illegals.

I hope you are right. What kind of rights do you think will be granted to illegals if this does happen?

Interesting blog Duncan. I think this policy was to be introduced a long time ago, as the United States immigration is one of the highest in the world. This is will be very significant for young immigrants who come to the US for a better education and better their life quality.

Definitely. A lot of bright minds are restricted from contributing to society because they are undocumented. Take the case of Pulitzer winning author Jose Antonio Vargas who had to fight through obstacles brought forth by his undocumented status in order to succeed as a journalist.
