If we have the curricula (curriculums?), it might be fun to teach a lesson as it was taught when the school was founded

Josh and Danny:

After reading the same post on libraryhistorybuff.org that Oumar mentioned, we came up with an idea that's similar to Rebecca's. I hope this means we're all having the right idea.

Have an interactive exhibit that includes library resources from 1888 as well as corresponding resources from past anniversary celebration years including 2013.

Pencil & paper, typewriter, electric typewriter, word processor, laptop.
Hand written schedule, computer schedule, reservation system, Roomer.
Card catalog, CLIO, Blacklight.
Lecture hall, Vialogues.
A pile of textbooks, Pocket Knowledge, mSchool.

These could be set up in a special exhibit area, or interspersed throughout the library near the existing resources.

The idea is to show changes and progress that we've already made. In addition to past and present resources, the exhibit would also include 'hints' of future progress. These wouldn't be functional technology (obviously) but they would show potential donners that their money would be spent on updating technologies which are constantly improving and need to be continuously improved.

Most libraries Oumar and I have looked at have an exhibit on the history of the library, which is less than inspiring, but some also get big name authors to come and talk. As ar as fundraising goes, nothing attracts money like celebrity.

Josh Lucas & I are interested in the 125 Years since the birth of Teachers College of the fight against banning books. Which books have been banned within, why, & by whom?
How far has American society come in terms of opening up to controversial thoughts, ideas & speech? Josh & I believe that we still have progress to make, requiring a lot of dialogue along the way. We suggest a forum be conducted encouraging discussion among the Teachers College and Columbia University community. We can discuss recent petitions aimed at books currently stocked at the Teachers College and Columbia libraries.

Hand out free copies of a custom-made book about TC’s history, containing testimonials, personal histories, selections from the archives, major historical events, etc.

A permanent gallery exhibit with large pictures of TC’s past.

An ongoing scavenger hunt / quest that takes you through the history, with a big prize at the end.

An exhibit on the past of the future of education [education’s future’s past]– past ideas from Teachers College about the future of education.

Mingoro and I have an idea for the start of the celebration. It could be a three day event. The first day mimics what a typical school day was like 125 years ago. People have to dress the part, and they have to eat a typical school lunch from 125 years ago and they don't have access to any technology and they have an unforgettable experience from the past. Then the next day, they experience a typical school day in the present and we focus on the contributions teachers college students and faculty have made to creating the current school day experience. The last day is what we hope for the future and how contributions can help us create this ideal school day we envision (we can discuss EdLab and how EdLab tools can shape the future of education!)

Yes! That is a great idea (especially the lunch part). I was also thinking it would be fun to showcase the major milestones in TC history with guests literally walking through the before and afters of TC innovations in scenes we re-create (actors dressed the part, etc.) And at the end, there would be a space for them to contribute ideas for how to shape the future.
