The Smartphone Market

As an Android phone user, I always feel a bit left out when I see an app is for iOS only. Thankfully, I'm not alone. As shown by a recent Neilsen survey, slightly more than half of all smartphone users have Android-based devices:

While there are certainly more issues inherent in developing apps for Android devices (or so I seem to hear everywhere, because I'm not a programmer), I think it's really important to see that while everyone talks about the iPhone and iOS devices, Android devices have a strong hold on the market. As we continue to push to mobile-native apps, equal attention needs to be given to the 50+% of smartphone users with Android devices, as well as users of feature phones and other smart phones (even though their share of the market seems to be diminishing on a regular basis).

In a way it is expected that Android boasts the most users considering that it is operated by numerous cellphone manufacturers (HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc...). Apple seems to get all the attention because they are always innovating (keep in mind they practically invented the smartphone) while others play catch up. I always like to think of Apple as the Yankees and Android the Mets since the Yankees always get all the buzz.

Rebecca, I found this very interesting as Android phones seem to have been giving the iPhone serious competition in the cellphone market. In your opinion, which type of phone would you think benefits users more?

I think it depends on what you're using the phone for. The main reason I chose Android was simply because I didn't like the iPhone itself (I'm very partial to having a physical keyboard). I actually am an Apple user otherwise (I don't think I can ever go back to Windows after OSX).

Besides the keyboard, I do like the openness and customizability of the Android platform, plus the fact that there are a range of devices you can purchase at different price points. I think that might be part of why Android has such a large share of the market.

I just find it interesting that while a lot of apps are developed solely for the iOS (or for iOS way ahead of Android), Android users make up a greater share of the market by 10-20%.

I agree with you Rebecca. As an old user of both phones, I felt that I was more in control of my phone using the Android rather than the Iphone. Apple in a way control the market in the US, and is trying to get all his competition down, as its conflict with the South Korean manufacturer Samsung never ends, but Android attract more customers. Coming back to your comment Duncan, Android is actually the Yankee because it is getting all the buzz.
