Check out this amazing interview with the director of The Incredibles and Ratatouille. He describes how he works with teams of animators to push the boundaries and achieve both creative and business success. In particular, note that he finds passive-aggressive people to be poisonous to a creative environment, and he weeds them out.

Pretty great interview. I especially liked:

  • His interest in making movies that he wants to watch
  • His descriptions of effective group processes
  • His desire to work with passionate artists and technicians
  • Getting rid of passive-aggressive collaborators
  • The end goal of trying to get somewhere, not just amassing resources

This reminds me of Google's "innovation time off" where employees are allowed to spend 20% of their work day on any work-related project that interests them. Some things thought of during that 20% time have been Gmail, Google news, and Ad sense. Of course, this idea is not without criticism. At any rate, I think the moral of the story is that passion lies in one's interests and inspires creativity. By harnessing this passion, businesses like Google have experienced increased success.

Thanks for this post, Gary. It was very inspiring to read about innovative concepts from such a master in animation. I wonder if we could get him to come in and give a talk for an EdLab Seminar?
