EdLab is the home for the development of innovative approaches to online learning at Teachers College. EdLab staff members have a range of experiences designing, supporting, and evaluating approaches to online learning. EdLab has supported the Blackboard course platform as the primary vehicle for distance learning courses at Teachers College and more recently has launched a version of the Moodle open source platform to support both formal courses and automatically deployable e-collaboration spaces. EdLab staff members work with faculty to develop online courses and resources.

EdLab has also been involved in the evaluation of online learning experiments. Most notably, EdLab handled all initial assessments for courses made available through Columbia University’s Fathom.com online learning initiative. EdLab staff also regularly offer workshops in the assessment of online learning courses and experiences.

EdLab worked with the Teachers College Record to produce a special issue of the journal dedicated to research on distance learning. The issue highlights new approaches to teaching and learning in online environments and identifies directions for advancing research and practice.
